Northport Groundwater Discharge Challenge
Fall 2007 Project Grant Award: $2,000
Fall 2007 Technical Grant Award: $3,500
Project Summary:
The Leelanau Forum filed a Michigan Environmental Protection Act lawsuit against Northport Village/Leelanau Township and Leelanau County on the construction of a wastewater treatment project. Our attorneys and engineers have determined pollution to the groundwater, adjacent Northport Creek, Millpond and Grand Traverse Bay will likely occur from the discharge of wastewater volume into the ground. To demonstrate the design flaw and the pollution impact, groundwater mounding studies by a hydrologist specializing in modeling can ultimately alter the entire project design and negate the pollution impact to our waters. The grant will provide financial assistance to retain a hydrologist with expertise in groundwater modeling to assess the environmental impacts and to create an informational newsletter to disseminate this information.
