Protecting U.P. Aquatic Resources by Protecting Surface Landowner Rights
Fall 2007 Project Grant Award: $3,500
Project Summary:

The prospect of multiple nonferrous metallic mining operations in the Upper Peninsula poses major risks to the health of some of the Great Lakes region's most precious groundwater and surface water habitats. This project will research the legal mechanisms landowners can utilize to control mining exploration or mining activity under their surface land ownership and protect habitat. Results will be used to help educate the public on mineral rights ownership and their role in protecting aquatic ecosystems. The grant will provide funds for the analysis and mapping, publishing and disseminating a report and workshops and outreach to local landowners.
